How to Crochet a Blanket for Beginners

A blanket is one of the most rewarding first crochet projects. It’s mostly straight rows, so you can focus on tension and stitch consistency without worrying about shaping.

Choose your yarn

For a first blanket, go with worsted weight acrylic or a wool blend. It’s affordable, washable, and forgiving. You’ll need roughly 1,000–1,500 yards for a lap blanket, depending on size.

Pick a simple stitch

Good starter stitches:

  • Single crochet — dense, sturdy, easy to count
  • Half double crochet — slightly faster, softer drape
  • Granny stripe — rows of granny clusters, great for color changes

Foundation and first row

Chain the width you want (plus 1 turning chain for single crochet, 2 for half double). Work your first row into the back bump of the chain for a neat bottom edge.

Turn, chain, and work across. Repeat until the blanket is the length you want.

Edging and finishing

Add a simple border: single crochet evenly around all four sides, with 3 single crochets in each corner to keep it flat. Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.

Block lightly if the edges curl.

Your first blanket doesn’t need to be perfect — it just needs to be made by you.
